Background/History
Isaiah 55:10–11 (“...watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it YIELDS seed for the sower and bread for the eater”).
YIELD Ethiopia’s origin is rooted in the humble, lived experience of a Christian family. For a long time, Monica Haile, her husband Fasika Lachore Laba, and their son Augustine Fasika celebrated birthdays and major feasts like Christmas and Easter by sharing with those in need, street children, and orphans. This practice was born from an "inner heart" conviction and a desire to respond to the hardships Fasika himself faced during his childhood. The parents wanted their son, Augustine, to grow up witnessing this spirit of charity.
Despite being a simple family living on a modest salary in Ethiopia, they chose this path over a life in Europe. Fasika has been serving as a missionary and the Pan-African Coordinator for the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) Pax Romana, witnessing global injustices while based in France. Rather than remaining abroad, the family opted to live in rural Ethiopia to uplift their local community. Consequently, the parents and their son founded YIELD, an organization that is "faith-inspired in values and community-rooted in practice." The name "YIELD" is derived from the spiritual promise found in Psalm 1:3 (“...like a tree planted by streams of water, which YIELDS its fruit in season”) and Isaiah 55:10–11 (“...watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it YIELDS seed for the sower and bread for the eater”).
YIELD Ethiopia was founded to address the granular, intersecting crises of multidimensional poverty, climate-induced migration, and high youth unemployment within the Wolaita Zone. It transitioned from a volunteer-led vision to a professionalized regional force designed to restore dignity through innovative, community-led solutions.
